“For a man that is above 70 to do 800 metres, that is like one mile; most young people can’t even do that," he stated.
Iyke Odikpo, a governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State, has said many young Nigerians cannot match President Muhammadu Buhari’s 800-metre walk.
The walk made the headlines, after Garba Shehu, the presidential spokesman, described the walk as proof that Buhari is fit to seek reelection.
Odikpo, who was a Wednesday guest on Politics Today, a programme on Channels, was asked if the APC had what it takes to match the energy of young candidates seeking to contest the presidential election. He, however, stated that winning elections goes beyond youthfulness.
His words: “For a man that is above 70 to do 800 metres, that is like one mile; most young people can’t even do that. Presidency of Nigeria goes beyond youthfulness. Nigeria is a complex society system, where a lot of experience, contact, reach [is needed] to win the presidential election.
“Yes, I agree that in advance world, youths are winning elections, but remember that in Nigeria here, you see a man who is 40, still calling himself a youth. His colleague in the UK, at 20, 21 has left school. In the Nigerian society, the developmental process is slow.”
