There are actually three types of diabetes i.e Type1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes. Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are chronic diseases. Gestational diabetes only happens during pregnancy and usually goes away after giving birth.
Type 1 diabetes is diagnosed usually in children and adults, although it is not that common and around 5 percent of those with diabetes have Type 1. People with Type 1 diabetes don’t produce insulin, while those with type 2 diabetes don’t respond to insulin well.
Here are certain subtle signs and symptoms of diabetes that you need to look out for.
You are thirsty all the time
Drinking enough water is a good habit, but if you notice that you have been gulping down more water than usual and still feel parched, there might be something amiss.
You take a lot of washroom breaks
When you are suffering from diabetes, you pee a lot. This is your body’s way of getting rid of the excess sugar which is there in your bloodstream. Keep a check whether your pee breaks are hampering your day-to-day life or even your sleep schedule. It might be time to talk to your doctor.
You are tired all the time
If you are getting enough sleep, but still face constant exhaustion, this could be the sign of an underlying issue. When you have diabetes, your body cannot break down carbohydrates. Hence, the food that you are eating is not being utilized effectively to give you enough energy to get through the day. This, in turn, can also make you feel tired and moody all the time. You just feel off and don’t feel like doing anything.
Your breath stinks
Diabetes can lead to ketones getting deposited in your blood and even urine. It can result in your breath smelling like acetone. Another factor that might be contributing to foul breath is dry mouth caused due to dehydration.
You feel hungry
When the cells in your body are not able to absorb sugar because of insulin resistance, your body looks for other sources for fuel. This lack of energy leads to an increase in hunger.
Unexplained weight loss
If you are losing weight without trying, diabetes could be one of the underlying cause. There is one simple reason for this. Insulin resistance basically means that your body is not able to get enough energy from sugar. This results in your body burning down your body fat for energy.
Your vision is getting blurry
Another sign of high blood sugar is a blurry vision. A buildup of fluid in the eye leads to blurred vision. You need to keep a check on your blood sugar level and getting them under control can help in resolving the problem.
Your wounds heal slowly
If your cuts, scrapes, and bruises are taking a lot of time to heal, it could be a red flag that there is something wrong with your body. When you have a high blood sugar, it becomes very easy for bacteria to breed. Also, poor circulation and narrow blood vessels can lead to slow healing.
If you experience any of these symptoms, we suggest that you consult a medical professional for further diagnosis.
